There’s something about the desert that strips away everything unnecessary. When Brooke and Jake reached their remote elopement location just before sunrise, wrapped in stillness and golden light, it was like the world stood still.

They didn’t want anything loud or lavish. What they wanted was a connection to the land, to each other, and to the moment. And what better day to honor that kind of love than Earth Day?

This wasn’t just any elopement. It was a western-style Utah desert elopement, filled with soul, grit, and beauty. From the cowboy boots to the sunrise vows, it was intentional through and through.

Every April, George (my husband and built-in officiant!) and I head to Utah for spring break. The red rock canyons and quiet mornings feel like home to us, and getting to share that with couples like Brooke and Jake is absolute magic!

Getting There: 3 AM Wake-Up, Jeep Trails + the Magic of Dispersed Lands

This kind of elopement isn’t for everyone. But for the right couple? It’s everything.

We were up at 3 AM, starting the day with some snuggles, a quiet breakfast, and getting ready. It took nearly two hours to get to their ceremony site—a rugged, remote pocket of Capitol Reef National Park, accessible only by high-clearance 4×4. The solitude made it feel like the desert belonged to just them.

There were no crowds, and also no cell service. Just dust trails, silence, and the promise of a new day. If you’re planning a Utah desert elopement in Capitol Reef, make sure you know the terrain (or go with someone like me, who knows it!). But definitely remember – safety first! You should bring paper maps, tell someone your plans, and consider renting a 4×4 in Torrey, Utah. There are great local outfitters who know these lands inside and out!

Their Utah Desert Elopement Ceremony During Sunrise

Tucked away in the backcountry of Capitol Reef, they exchanged vows beneath towering stone formations carved by time and silence. George officiated the ceremony as the first light hit the cliffs, and it honestly felt sacred.

They leaned into every bit of the Western vibe: lace dress, bolo tie, cowboy hat, and boots covered in red dust. It was raw, romantic, and absolutely them—the kind of morning that lives in your bones.

Brooke’s bouquet was pure desert romance—soft blush tones, delicate dried textures, and blooms that felt both untamed and artfully arranged. It was the perfect match for their style—just enough elegance to feel elevated but still grounded in that wild, windswept vibe we all love. Huge shoutout to Desert Rose Creative for bringing this vision to life with so much heart and intention! The bouquet absolutely completed the look.

Getting Your Capitol Reef National Park Elopement Permit

If you’re dreaming of getting married in Capitol Reef National Park, you’ll need to apply for a special use permit. Capitol Reef welcomes small, simple, and rustic ceremonies—think no-frills, no arches, and no decorations attached to the landscape. It’s all about the raw beauty of the desert and the love you bring with you.

Here are a few important things to know:

• Permits are $100 and should be submitted with a check or paid through pay.gov once you’re assigned a permit number.
  
• Ceremonies are only allowed in front-country areas (like picnic areas and campgrounds); due to wilderness protections, backcountry weddings aren’t permitted.
  
• Amplified music, arches, generators, or decor attached to trees or structures are not allowed. A few folding chairs are okay.
  
• Group sizes and locations for photos may be limited, but you’re welcome to take portraits in other areas of the park!
  
• Weddings must be scheduled at least 7 days in advance and can be booked up to a year ahead.
  
• Receptions aren’t allowed in ceremony spaces but can be held in picnic areas.
  
• You’ll need to carry your permit with you during your ceremony.

Make sure to check the 3-day weather forecast and have a backup plan if needed! And above all, respect the land. Capitol Reef is public land, and Leave No Trace principles apply to every step of the celebration. 

Where to Stay for Your Capitol Reef National Park Elopement

Brooke and Jake got ready at Capitol Reef Cabins in Torrey, and I cannot recommend it enough. The A-frame architecture is adorable, and the cozy, cabin feel makes for such a peaceful getting-ready experience.

Plus, it supports local! Torrey has some incredible small businesses that really make your time here feel personal and rooted. From coffee shops to gear rentals, it’s got everything you need to make your elopement day special from start to finish.

Their Adventurous Utah Desert Elopement Activities

These two didn’t just elope and leave—they turned their celebration into a full-on honeymoon adventure. After the ceremony, they set up camp under the stars. No fancy hotels. Just a tent, a fire, and the wild beauty of the desert.

Dispersed camping is allowed in many areas around Capitol Reef (just make sure you follow local guidelines), and it offers the ultimate freedom! You get to wake up to sunrise over the canyons and fall asleep under the stars, and it’s the best!

As you can see, the adventure doesn’t stop after your vows. Whether you’re planning a full weekend getaway or just want to soak up the magic of the Utah desert a little longer, here are a few other amazing activities besides camping to consider:

This is especially important now when we need to fight to keep them safe and out of the hands of developers.
