Best Places to Elope on the East Coast in 2027

An experience-based guide by a New England elopement photographer

Planning an East Coast elopement in 2027? You do not have to fly across the world to find wild coastlines, quiet forests, mountain views, historic estates, island towns, waterfalls, cozy inns, and the kind of slow, meaningful wedding experience that actually feels like you.

I’ve lived in Connecticut my whole life, and this part of the country is woven into me. I know the backroads, the seasons, the moody coastlines, the pockets of old stone walls and mountain laurel, the little towns that feel like they belong in a novel, and the places where the light hits just right in the fall. Connecticut is home, but New England as a whole has always felt like one big map of possibility.

I’m also someone who needs to move. Hiking, horseback riding, gravel riding, wandering with my husband George, chasing fog, scouting trails, finding good food after a long day outside — that’s how I get to know a place. And as an elopement photographer, those personal experiences matter. I don’t want to send couples somewhere just because it photographs well. I care about how a place feels. How it holds you. How easy it is to slow down there. How much space it gives you to be present.

So this guide is not just a list of pretty places. These are my favorite East Coast and Northeast elopement destinations for couples who want a wedding experience rooted in place, nature, beauty, and intention.

1. Acadia National Park, Maine

Whether you’re dreaming of rocky Maine coastline, a Connecticut garden estate, a private cabin weekend, mountain vows in the Catskills or garden estates in the Berkshires, a windswept island, or a slow fall elopement in Acadia, here are some of the best places to elope on the East Coast in 2027.

If I had to choose one place that captures the wild, salt-air soul of a New England elopement, it would be Acadia.

Acadia National Park has rocky coastlines, evergreen forests, pink granite cliffs, quiet carriage roads, tide pools, mountain views, and that moody ocean light that makes everything feel a little more sacred. It is one of those places where you can begin your morning tucked into the woods, exchange private vows on the rocks, wander the coastline, eat lobster rolls after your ceremony, and end the day watching the light fall over the water.

In my opinion, Acadia is one of the best places to elope on the East Coast because it gives you so much variety in one small area. You can have an adventurous day without needing to hike ten miles. You can bring a few guests and still keep the experience intimate. You can build the day around sunrise, tides, food, quiet pockets of the park, and meaningful time together.

The key with Acadia is planning around crowds, weather, parking, permits, and the kind of experience you actually want. This is not a place where I recommend winging it. The best Acadia elopement days usually have breathing room, flexible locations, a calm backup plan, and someone guiding you who knows how quickly the coast can change.

Best for: coastal vows, hiking, rocky cliffs, lobster rolls, intimate ceremonies, sunrise, moody weather, full-day or multi-day elopements.
My favorite season: June, September, and October.
Experience tip: Build in time outside the ceremony. Acadia is made for slow wandering, not rushing from one overlook to the next.

2. Coastal Maine

Beyond Acadia, coastal Maine deserves its own place on this list. Mid-coast, the Bold Coast and of course, Downeast Maine.

There is something about Maine that invites you to slow down. The fog, the working harbors, the pine trees, the old inns, the lobster pounds, the quiet cabins, the rocky beaches, the way the whole coast feels a little rugged and romantic at the same time. It is perfect for couples who want a wedding weekend that feels more like a getaway than a performance.

A coastal Maine elopement could look like getting ready in a cabin by the water, exchanging vows on the rocks, taking a boat ride, sharing oysters or lobster rolls, gathering around a long table with a few close people, or staying somewhere peaceful where the whole weekend feels like part of the story.

I especially love Maine for couples who value food, place, and atmosphere. This is where your elopement can become a full experience: where you stay, where you eat, how you move through the day, and how much space you give yourselves to enjoy it all.

Best for: wedding weekends, foodie couples, ocean views, cozy lodging, boat rides, private vows, coastal cabins.
My favorite season: late spring through fall.

3. Connecticut Coast and Garden Estates

Connecticut might be small, but she has range.

Because I’ve lived here my whole life, I know Connecticut in a way that feels personal. I know the soft coastal light, the historic estates, the gardens, the quiet trails, the river towns, the old stone walls, the beaches, the farm roads, and the moody little corners that people miss when they think Connecticut is just a pass-through state between New York and Boston.

For elopements, the Connecticut coast can be incredibly romantic. Places like Harkness Memorial State Park and Eolia Mansion! bring that old-world garden estate feeling with views of Long Island Sound, open lawns, architecture, flower gardens, and space for an intimate ceremony. It feels elegant without needing to become overly formal.

Connecticut is also a beautiful choice for couples who want something elevated, meaningful, and close to home. Not every elopement has to be a massive travel production. Sometimes the most grounded, beautiful choice is choosing a place that already holds memory, family, or a sense of belonging.

Best for: garden elopements, coastal vows, estate-style portraits, intimate ceremonies, couples who want elegance and ease.
My favorite season: May, June, September, and October.
Experience tip: Weekdays are your friend. Connecticut’s most beautiful public spaces feel much more intimate when you avoid peak weekend crowds.

4. Northwest Corner, Connecticut

This is one of my favorite parts of my home state.

Northwest Connecticut has a completely different feeling from the coast. It is quieter, hillier, earthier. Think waterfalls, rivers, forests, winding roads, covered-bridge energy, old inns, farms, lakes, and small towns that feel especially beautiful in the fall.

The Litchfield Hills are perfect for couples who want a nature-inspired Connecticut elopement without leaving New England. There are places where you can hike, wander by the river, have a private ceremony in the woods, stay at a cozy inn, and celebrate with an intimate dinner afterward. It has that nostalgic summer-camp-meets-New-England-fall feeling that I have always loved.

This part of Connecticut is especially meaningful to me because it feels like home in the deepest way. It is not trying to be dramatic like the Tetons or Patagonia. It is softer than that. More rooted. More understated. The beauty here asks you to pay attention.

Best for: forest elopements, waterfalls, fall foliage, cozy inns, private vows, earthy New England romance.
My favorite season: late September through October, though summer is beautiful too.
Experience tip: Let the day feel local. Add a slow breakfast, a short hike, a picnic, a farm-to-table dinner, or a cozy inn stay.

When I think of Lakeville, Connecticut, I’m reminded of the incredible waterfalls. You know that summer cabin where your family used to drag you to every summer? Where you felt like the days were never-ending and you could live freely without a care in the world? You’d wake up and run outside to feel the wet grass from the morning dew and just feel a sense of PEACE?

Yeah. This is that place. Except that instead of a tire swing being your main source of excitement, you’ll be getting married! And then, if you’re into all things nature, you HAVE to elope in Barkhamsted. This place is like a scene straight out of a fairytale… and that’s no exaggeration!

From the beautiful mountain tops all the way down to the rivers, everywhere you turn is stunningly beautiful. I highly recommend visiting Barkhamsted in the Fall, when nature is at its most beautiful and serene state.

5. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires feel like Connecticut’s moodier, more dramatic cousin — artistic, romantic, mountain-framed, and a little literary.

This is one of my favorite regions for couples who want a New England elopement with texture. You have mountain views, historic estates, forests, waterfalls, gardens, museums, cozy restaurants, and charming towns. It can feel refined or woodsy depending on where you go.

The Mount in Lenox is especially beautiful for couples who want that romantic, old-world, storybook feeling. It has gardens, architecture, woodland paths, and a sense of history that gives the whole day a cinematic quality. Then you have places like Mount Greylock, Bash Bish Falls, and quieter corners throughout western Massachusetts that are perfect for nature-forward elopements.

The Berkshires are a beautiful fit for couples who care about art, food, design, fashion, and landscape. It is a place where you can create an elopement that feels elevated but still grounded.

Best for: romantic estates, mountain views, literary energy, garden ceremonies, fall color, artful elopement weekends.

6. Rhode Island Coast + Block Island

Rhode Island may be tiny, but its coastline has so much personality.

For couples dreaming of a beachy New England elopement, Rhode Island gives you lighthouses, rocky shores, sailboats, historic towns, ocean air, and a little bit of that old coastal romance. It is easier to access than some of the farther-flung New England destinations, but it still feels like a getaway.

Block Island has its own magic. The clay cliffs, beaches, lighthouses, and slower island pace make it feel removed from everyday life. An elopement here can feel simple in the best way: ferry ride, wind in your hair, vows by the water, dinner after, and a full day that feels like stepping outside of time.

Rhode Island is a great choice if you love coastal New England but want something different from Maine. Softer, beachier, a little more classic seaside.

7. White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains are one of the best East Coast elopement destinations for couples who want adventure without leaving New England. There are trails for different abilities, dramatic overlooks, forests, alpine feeling, waterfalls, and some of the most rugged terrain in the region.

This is a place for couples who want to feel the day in their bodies a little. Maybe you hike to a view, exchange private vows, change into boots, pack layers, and let the weather be part of it. It does not have to be extreme, but the White Mountains do ask for respect. Conditions can change quickly, and the best elopement experience here comes from planning with safety, timing, and flexibility in mind.

My favorite season: late summer through fall.

8. The Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks feel wild in a way that is different from the rest of the Northeast.

They are vast, forested, lake-filled, and a little untamed. If you love cabins, canoes, mountain roads, quiet lakes, dense evergreens, and a sense of getting away from it all, the Adirondacks can be such a beautiful place to elope.

This region is ideal for couples who want a slower, more secluded experience. It is less about one single famous overlook and more about building a wedding weekend around the landscape: a lakeside cabin, a private ceremony, a hike, a paddle, a fire, a meal, a slow morning together.

The Adirondacks feel especially good for adventurous couples who don’t mind an elevation gain hike who want privacy, nature, and that deep-woods kind of romance.

Experience tip: Give yourself extra time here. The Adirondacks are big, and the best experience often comes from slowing down instead of trying to cover too much ground.

8. Catskills, New York

The Catskills have such a strong personality: waterfalls, cliffs, epic hikes, wooded trails, boutique stays, old mountain towns, and a little bit of wild-west-meets-New-York energy.

I love the Catskills for couples who want something creative, cozy, and less traditional. You can build a day around a cabin, a waterfall, a mountain overlook, a vintage-inspired stay, a private dinner, or a weekend with close friends. It has just enough edge to feel interesting, but it still feels warm and accessible.

This is also a great region for couples coming from New York City who want nature without flying across the country. It feels like an escape, but not an impossible one.

Best for: waterfalls, cliffs, cabin weekends, stylish stays, fall elopements, couples coming from NYC.

Experience tip: The Catskills are amazing for couples who want their elopement to feel like a whole weekend: stay somewhere cool, eat well, wander, and keep the day relaxed.

How to Choose the Right East Coast Elopement Location

Choosing where to elope is not just about finding the prettiest backdrop. It is about choosing the place that matches the kind of experience you want.

Before picking a location, ask yourselves:

• Do we want ocean, mountains, forest, gardens, or a mix of everything?
• Do we want to hike, or do we want easy access to beautiful scenery?

• Do we want a private just-us experience or a few guests with us?
• Do we care about food, lodging, and the full weekend?
• Do we want something close to home or a true destination feeling?
• Do we want our day to feel elegant, rugged, cozy, cinematic, quiet, adventurous, or deeply relaxed?

This is where planning becomes more than logistics. A good elopement location should support the way you want to feel. Calm. Present. Connected. Free to actually experience your wedding day instead of performing it.

That is the part I care about most.
