This is exactly what I had in mind.

This was that weekend. The Foggy Pearl in Hancock, Maine, is one of the newest intimate wedding and elopement venues on the Maine coast, and when I first came across it, I reached out to Jillian (the venue’s marketing guru) almost immediately. I had a vision in my head of a moody, cinematic, Wuthering Heights-inspired elopement by the water. Wind off the shoreline. Fog rolling in. Something textural and wild and deeply coastal Maine.

What we actually got was sunshine the entire weekend, but it was just as gorgeous.

Jillian and I had been planning this collaboration since November, and seeing it finally come to life with the right couple, the right team, and a venue that somehow exceeded every expectation, felt genuinely surreal in the best way. 

This also became our second annual Acadia Elopement Collective spring creative retreat, which gave me a chance to reconnect with Ashley before another busy Maine elopement season, create together intentionally, and keep refining the full-weekend experience we offer our couples.

Our couple, Julia and Michael, made the whole weekend feel even sweeter. They’ve been together for five years, they’re true Mainers, and their love has this easy, romantic, wildly natural quality to it that is genuinely rare to photograph. Honestly, they could have been professional models. Ashley and I kept looking at each other like “Okay… are they kidding?” They were that good. 

But more than how they looked, it was how they moved through the weekend with tenderness, ease, and this unforced joy that made every single moment feel real. They weren’t performing. They were just… there. Together. Completely.

Located along the coast just outside of Acadia National Park, The Foggy Pearl is one of Maine’s newest intimate wedding and elopement venues. One of the things I love most about its location is how close it is to so many beautiful areas, yet it still feels peaceful and tucked away. 

Schoodic Point, the quieter side of Acadia National Park and one of my favorite places in Maine, is only about 30 minutes away, while Bar Harbor sits roughly an hour from the property, depending on traffic and ferry timing. Couples get access to Acadia’s beauty while still having space to step away from the busier parts of the park and settle more intentionally along the coast. 

What immediately struck me about The Foggy Pearl was how perfectly it supports the idea of a true elopement weekend — not just a ceremony location, but a place where you can actually live inside the experience for a few days.

Pulling up to the boardwalk, loading our belongings into a wagon, and walking down the path over the water and into the woods felt surreal. And then seeing the Island House for the first time — wow. The Island House

The Island House becomes your own private coastal Maine retreat for the weekend. It is a place for you to wake up slowly, make coffee overlooking the water, and have real space to just be together before the day begins. Spacious, comfortable, and designed with the kind of quiet intention that makes you exhale the moment you walk in. The Island House also offers two bedrooms if additional guests are joining for part of the weekend. 

“Some of our favorite moments were seeing each other for the first time in our wedding attire and finding one another along the boardwalk in the woods. Another moment we kept thinking about was sitting on the back porch at sunset, looking out at the ocean with our favorite songs playing softly in the background. We also loved the quieter moments at the end of the night, cuddling up together to watch a movie with our favorite snacks after a long day filled with photos, exploring, and excitement.”- J&M

The Blue House

The Blue House is a beautifully restored four-bedroom space with four beds on the property, perfect for family or close friends who want to be nearby for part of the weekend without disrupting the intimacy of the experience. Everyone stays close. The couple still has privacy and breathing room. Nobody has to rush back to a separate hotel at the end of the night.

Outdoor dinners. Slow mornings. Charcuterie by the water. Cake and candlelight after sunset. Time to gather around the table together instead of scattering at the end of the evening. That’s exactly the kind of setting I had in mind when I first reached out to Jillian.

Low Tide, Fairy Forests, and the Kind of Maine Rarely Found on a Postcard

One of my favorite things about this weekend was what happened between the planned moments.

At low tide, the property transforms. You can walk out onto the exposed island — bladderwrack seaweed underfoot, mussel shells scattered across the rocks, tiny pine trees draped in old man’s beard lichen that make the whole place feel like something out of a fairy tale. The moss is genuinely luminous. The light filters through the trees at an angle that feels almost staged, except it’s completely real.

We saw seagulls, an osprey, and at one point, an eagle. The water, on the calmer days, was an almost Caribbean shade of green — reflective and still and quietly stunning. Sunrise and sunset over the water were both worth waking up and staying up for.

This is the Maine that doesn’t end up on tourist brochures. It’s quieter than that, and much more interesting.

The Team That Made Coastal Elopement Weekend at the Foggy Pearl Happen

What made this collaboration feel so special wasn’t just the venue or the couple — it was the energy every single person brought to the table. Everyone showed up with their own talent, care, and genuine investment in bringing the vision to life. It felt like a true team effort from start to finish, and you can feel that in the work. Everthine Bridal loaned us their gorgeous Saint Bridal Dress that looked like a sculptural art installation; it flowed like water. Hair was done by the talented Shaylee Tardiff, and the beautiful, clean, natural makeup look was done by Golden Bridal Artistry.

The dinner design became another favorite part of the story. Florals by Seal Point Farm brought in beautiful, natural texture and movement that felt perfectly aligned with the landscape. Sweet Peas Farm Cafe created a beautiful charcuterie spread and dinner experience that invited everyone to slow down and gather around the table together. Wallace Events layered in rentals that elevated the space while keeping it intimate and relaxed. And the cake from A Slice of Eden Bar Harbor was the perfect celebratory ending to the evening — a sweet finish after a beautiful coastal dinner by the water.

How We Documented The Coastal Maine Elopement Weekend 

Ashley joined me for the weekend through the Acadia Elopement Collective, and moments like this remind me exactly why I love documenting elopements as a team. We can approach the day in a way that’s calm, intuitive, and supportive, with space for real moments to unfold naturally rather than be managed. When schedules align, George, The Traveling Officiant, also joins us as officiant and, honestly, general right-hand man, helping couples feel grounded and cared for throughout the weekend while somehow also producing incredible meals in the middle of everything.

We documented the full weekend through digital photography, 35mm film, video, drone footage, and Super 8 — not as separate deliverables, but as different ways of holding the same experience. Digital captures the clarity of the moment. Film holds its atmosphere, grain, and texture. Super 8 introduces motion in a way that feels closer to memory than documentation.

Looking back at the work now, the photos feel like a coastal Maine novel came to life for a weekend. Cinematic and windswept and intimate and textural. There’s editorial beauty in them, but also real emotional honesty — nothing stiff, nothing staged. The wind, the water, the candlelight, the film grain, the fog moving across the water in the early morning. It all works together in a way that feels immersive instead of just pretty.

What I keep coming back to is how experiential the images feel. They don’t say “here’s a couple at a venue.” They say: “This is what it felt like to stay here for the weekend.”

This weekend was a living example of what I mean when I talk about Stay Awhile elopement experiences. The idea that if you’re traveling all the way to coastal Maine or Acadia, or the Dolomites, or Grand Teton, or anywhere that already holds meaning… Why rush through it?

My mom joined us for the weekend, which gave me the chance to spend time with family in a place that already feels deeply grounding to me. The whole thing also happened over George’s birthday weekend, which made those slower, in-between moments like hiking together, cooking meals, sitting by the water after sunset feel especially meaningful.

Those are the moments that remind me why I care so much about designing multi-day elopement experiences in the first place. The best parts are rarely the scheduled ones.
