Connecticut doesn’t always get the credit it deserves when it comes to eloping. People picture the mountains out west or the coast of Maine, and they forget that this state is full of fern forests, waterfalls, stone bridges, and ridgelines that turn gold at sunset — all within an hour or two of pretty much anywhere in New England.

I’ve spent a lifetime living in this state and exploring these places, both for my own enjoyment and for the couples I work with, and what I keep coming back to is this: the best elopement locations aren’t necessarily the most photographed ones. They’re the ones that actually fit how you want your day to feel.

So here are ten of my favorite outdoor places to elope in Connecticut! Beautiful, intentional, and built around the experience of actually being there, not just the photo at the end of it.

1. White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, CT

White Memorial spans 4,000 protected acres around Bantam Lake, and in late spring the understory fills with mountain laurel in pale pink and white blooms. The trails here wind for miles through fern groves and old boardwalks, so if you want a long, unhurried walk before your vows, the kind where you actually talk and breathe and arrive somewhere different than where you started, this is it.

Perfect for: fern forests, mountain laurel in spring, long walks, private vows

Pair it with: a picnic tucked into the trees, a canoe rental on Bantam Lake, or dinner in town afterward in Litchfield.

2. Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, CT

There’s a moment at Harkness when you come around the formal gardens and the Long Island Sound just opens up in front of you — grass running right to the edge of the water, the Harkness mansion rising behind you like something out of an old film. 

The gardens themselves are walled and sectioned into intimate “rooms,” so even with the whole 230-acre estate around you, you can find a private corner that feels like it was built just for the two of you. 

One important note: the pergola is only available for a full ceremony if you rent the mansion itself. It’s lovely for photos either way, so it’s worth planning ahead if Harkness is on your shortlist.

Pair it with: lawn games on the grounds, champagne overlooking the water, or a coastal dinner nearby.

3. People’s State Forest in Barkhamsted, CT

Tucked along the Farmington River, People’s State Forest has the kind of dense, towering woodland that makes you feel genuinely small in the best way. The covered pavilions make it especially practical if you’re gathering a few family members, and the river access adds a different texture to your day if you want to wander down to the water.

Perfect for: forest lovers, family gatherings, covered pavilions, fly fishing, river access

4. Topsmead State Forest in Litchfield, CT

Topsmead used to be a private summer estate, and it still feels that way — a Tudor-style cottage on a hilltop, four acres of manicured lawn, formal gardens bookending the house as something lifted straight out of the English countryside. The fields roll out from the house in every direction, open and golden in late afternoon light, with apple trees lining the drive. 

It’s a beautiful match for a ceremony that’s elegant but still entirely outdoors. Since it tends to draw weekend visitors for tours and photos, a weekday ceremony (Monday through Thursday) is your best bet for having the grounds mostly to yourselves.

5. Steep Rock Preserve in Washington, CT

If you and your partner are hikers at heart, Steep Rock is the kind of place that makes the whole day feel like an adventure. There’s a curved railroad tunnel cut by hand through solid rock, the Shepaug River looping below in wide oxbows, and a suspension bridge that sways gently as you cross it. Climb to the summit, and you’re rewarded with a sweeping view over the Clamshell bend of the river, the kind of payoff that makes the climb worth every step. 

Because it’s a preserve rather than a private venue, a few rules apply — no alcohol, fires, or drones on the property — so plan your celebration for afterward, in town, or back at your own Airbnb.

6. Macricostas Preserve in Washington, CT

This one is personal. My husband George and I hike here ourselves, so I can tell you firsthand that the ridgeline views at sunset are genuinely some of the best in the area. It’s a shorter hike than Steep Rock, which makes it a great option if you want the open-ridge, golden-hour feeling without a long trek beforehand.

Perfect for: sunset views, open ridgelines, hiking, small guest counts

7. Hidden Valley Preserve in Washington, CT

Hidden Valley feels exactly like its name suggests — tucked away, quiet, and a little bit secret. The suspension bridge over the river is a stunning, slightly unexpected detail, and the overlooks give you that feeling of being somewhere far more remote than you actually are. Beyond the bridge, the trails wander through moss-covered hillsides that genuinely look enchanted after a rain, past the ruins of an old quartz mine, out to overlooks where the valley opens up below you.

A beautiful choice for couples who want their ceremony to feel private and undisturbed.

8. Kent Falls State Park in Kent, CT

Kent Falls isn’t one waterfall — it’s a whole quarter-mile staircase of cascades dropping 250 feet through old marble bedrock, with a covered bridge at the base and stone steps climbing alongside the water the whole way up. It’s been voted the best state park in Connecticut for photography, so weekends draw a real crowd. I’d really encourage a midweek elopement here for the most privacy!

Perfect for: waterfall lovers, midweek ceremonies, smaller guest counts

Pair it with: a meal at one of Kent’s restaurants, ice cream in town, and an afternoon wandering the shops afterward.

9. Giuffrida Park in Meriden, CT

Giuffrida Park is a wonderful option if you want something beautiful but low-key — a local, easygoing elopement with little travel or planning required. The reservoir overlooks are stunning at sunset, and it has a relaxed, unfussy energy that suits a smaller, casual celebration.

Perfect for: sunset views, reservoir overlooks, casual local elopements

Pair it with: a charcuterie board, a bottle of champagne, and a front-row seat for sunset.

10. Dennis Hill State Park in Norfolk, CT

Dennis Hill tops out at 1,627 feet, and on a clear day, the view from the old summit pavilion stretches all the way to Mount Greylock and the Green Mountains of Vermont — layers of hills fading into haze in every direction. It is some of the best mountain views in the northwest corner of the state. It’s quiet, it’s elevated, and it’s especially stunning in fall when the hills below turn into a patchwork of color.

Finding the Right Place to Elope in Connecticut

Connecticut has a beautiful range to it — forests and waterfalls and ridgelines and coastal estates, all within a fairly small footprint. Whichever of these places speaks to you, the goal is always the same: choose somewhere that actually reflects who you are as a couple, not just somewhere that photographs well.
